- North Korea¡¯s official position on the Sinking of the Cheonan has changed three times
- While blaming South Korea at first, NK now claims that the US tried to heighten tensions on Peninsular
- High-ranking NK officials propagated this claim on an international platform
On July 6th, a high level source in North Korea stated that the country¡¯s overseas agents are propagating that the US. had been behind the explosion of the South Korean ship ¡°Cheonan¡±.
The source also said that North Korea had held a lecture in China on May 26th in order to propagate the involvement of the US in the sunken ship incidence. Within NK the propaganda department spread the ¡°news¡± that the US triggered the unfortunate incidence in order to initiate a war between North and South Korea.
North Korea has changed its official stance regarding the issue three times. The first time at the end of March until the middle of April, just after the ship sunk, the country ordered its embassies and consulates not to comment on the incidence at all.
The second time, from the middle of April to May 25th, the country delivered the statement that it had nothing to do with the incidence, and that the explosion had been triggered by South Korea itself. The NK government reaffirmed its position by publicizing comments through the Chosun Central News Agency on April 17th, nominating a spokesperson for the National Defense Committee and making further announcements relating to military issues on 20th May.
As of May 26th, North Korea began blaming the US for the incidence. Comments such as ¡°Who benefits the most from the Cheonan Ship incidence?¡± by the central news agency stress that the US would benefit the most from such a ship explosion. They suggest that the US staged the whole incidence.
Choi Tae-Bok, the chairman of the Supreme Congress of the People, attended the Third World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (WCSP) in Geneva on July 20th. In his speech, he highlighted that the US was behind the case.
The source said that if North Korea was indeed innocent, it would not have changed its position this often. It added that NK¡¯s inconsistent stance regarding the issue emphasizes that it was deeply involved in the matter. |
